Commissioner Sorenson elected to leadership post with the South Florida Regional Planning Council

(Miami-Dade County, FL) --
Commissioner Katy Sorenson was unanimously elected the Secretary of the South Florida Regional Planning Council by its members on June 1, 2009.  Commissioner Sorenson rejoined the Council in 2009 when incoming Miami-Dade Board of County Commissioners Chairman Dennis Moss reappointed her to the organization.  She had previously served on the Regional Planning Council from 1994 to 2006.  “I’m thankful to my colleagues on the Regional Planning Council for entrusting me with this post so soon after my reappointment to the Board,” said Commissioner Sorenson.  “I look forward to working with the members of the Council on issues of regional significance and will continue to impress upon our State leaders the important contribution that regional oversight should play in the growth of South Florida.”

Commissioner Sorenson sought and received support from the Miami-Dade Board of County Commissioners for a resolution urging the Governor to veto SB 360 which eliminates large scale development reviews – a major function of the South Florida Regional Planning Council.  Unfortunately, over opposition from a host of environmental organizations and the Florida Association of Counties, the Governor signed the bill into law last week.  “The South Florida Regional Planning Council provides an important forum for the governments of our area to coordinate with each other,” offered Sorenson. “I hope we will convince the Legislature and the Governor to reconsider their position and reinstate the Development of Regional Impact process.”
