Commissioner Lynda Bell honors 7th grader Claire Zuo after winning the 2011 Miami Herald Spelling Bee

County Commissioner Lynda Bell issued a Commission Certificate of Congratulations to Palmetto Bay Middle School student, Claire Zuo, after winning the 2011 Miami Herald Spelling Bee earlier this year.  Surrounded by her proud father, her teachers and school administrators, at a ceremony honoring the students of Palmetto Bay Middle School who achieved Honor Roll status on Thursday, May 26th, Commissioner Bell presented Claire with her well-earned certificate of congratulations and recognized all honorees for their academic excellence.

"Few people understand just how rigorous and challenging this annual competition can be and the commitment and dedication it takes to not only compete but to win this renowned and widely respected contest.  Claire Zuo has set the example of what can be accomplished when you set your mind to do great things." - Said Commissioner Bell.

Claire Zuo moves on to the national competition in Washington where she will compete with children her own age in June.  The Annual Miami Herald Spelling Bee competition, in its 71st year, gives the winners a plaque, a savings bond, a dictionary and an all-expense paid trip to the nationals for kids and their parents to first place winners every year.  In addition to these winnings, Claire will also receive gift cards from TD Bank.
