Vice Chair Lynda Bell tours PortMiami to inspect expansion projects

(PortMiami, FL)  - In her capacity as Chair of the Economic Development and PortMiami Committee, Vice Chair Lynda Bell recently toured PortMiami while being briefed by Captain Andy Melick, Chairman of the Biscayne Bay Pilot Ships, as she inspected the progress of the many Port projects designed to accommodate expanded cargo and cruise ships arriving from all over the world; with particular emphasis on the Panamax supertankers, as a result of the Panama Canal expansion project slated to be completed by late 2015.  Captain Melick also briefed Vice Chair Bell on the progress of the Miami Dredging Project which is right on target to be finalized by the summer of 2015, as well as the importance of the Pilot Ships which are critical in assisting cargo and cruise ships while arriving and departing the Port of Miami.

“This tour gave me an invaluable insight on the progress that our dedicated PortMiami employees are making in ensuring that the Port remains the only, truly viable and competitive seaport in the south able to accommodate the new, commercial  supertankers in time for their arrival from the expanded Panama Canal in 2015, said Vice Chair Bell.  The progress being made is truly impressive and it means that our County will have more commercial ventures which translate to more stable jobs for all our residents and the promise of a more prosperous future for all of Miami-Dade County.  I enthusiastically look forward to more briefings as 2015 nears.”
