Commissioner Sorenson has led the charge to change the way we build our homes and businesses. She has promoted environmentally sustainable "green building"  for developers of residential and commercial projects, and made sustainable development County policy for future government construction.

Many cities are catching on to the green building trend too, with recent announcements by the City of Miami and the Village of Palmetto Bay seeking to bring sustainable building to their communities.

Commissioner Sorenson has fostered the rapid growth of the green building trend in Miami-Dade through the following:

• Helped create a Sustainability Office for Miami-Dade
  
  
• Created a "fast-track" option for developers committing to certifying their projects as sustainable through State and national accreditation.
  
  
• Added a targeted job creation credit for companies that make "green buildings" while bringing new jobs to Miami-Dade
  
  
• Sponsored a resolution declaring sustainable building a policy of the County.  The first project - the children's courthouse - is expected to reach LEED Silver certification as a green building (for more on sustainable building rating systems click here)
  
  
• Helped Palmetto Bay "go green" with their proposed Library branch
  
  
• Has worked with the Miami-Dade Housing Agency to provide environmentally friendly and energy efficient affordable housing
  
  
• Commissioner Sorenson actively promoted Sustainable Building opportunities for South Florida.  She recently was a featured speaker at the Tropical Green  International Green Building Conference
