(Miami-Dade County, FL) -- Commissioner Dennis C. Moss sponsored a resolution that was unanimously approved by the Board of County Commissioners on June 17, that allowed Mayor Carlos Alvarez to negotiate the lease of County-owned land and a building adjacent to Homestead Air Reserve Base (HARB) to the United States of America to house the base operations of the Special Operations Command South (SOCSOUTH). SOCSOUTH is a unit of the Southern Command (SOUTHCOM) of the U.S. military.
“This negotiation between the County and the U.S. military, not only encourages military growth and partnership in Miami-Dade, but also has a positive economic impact on our community, particularly during these difficult times,” noted Commissioner Moss.

Currently, SOCSOUTH occupies several temporary office trailers located within HARB, but it has outgrown these facilities. The unit’s long term plan is to move its operations and build new offices serving as its headquarters on land owned by Miami-Dade County adjacent to HARB, with construction beginning in the next three years. In the interim, Commissioner Moss’ proposal stipulates that the County lease a 3,000 square-foot office building and storage space already existing on County-owned land at HARB, as well as additional land for more temporary office trailers. Eventually, SOCSOUTH plans to expand its personnel from 200 to 400 members with the expansion of its headquarters. The lease should be finalized by the end of June 2008 in order to keep SOCSOUTH’s construction timeline on schedule.
