(Miami-Dade County, FL) -- Miami-Dade County Chairman Dennis C. Moss, Board Member of the Miami-Dade Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) was elected Chairman of the MPO by the governing board on Thursday, January 29, 2009 during their monthly meeting. Board Member Perla T. Hantman was elected as their Vice Chairwoman. Both Moss and Hantman will serve a two year term. Chairman Moss also serves as the Chairman of the Board of County Commissioners and Vice Chairwoman Hantman also serves as a member on the Miami-Dade County Public School Board.
Previously, in times past, it was customary for the existing Chair of the Miami-Dade Board of County Commissioners to serve as Chairperson of the MPO. On April 24, 2008, a resolution was duly passed and approved, by a 10 to 7 vote, allowing the MPO's Governing Board to elect their own Chairperson and Vice Chairperson.
The MPO Governing Board is responsible for guiding the transportation planning process and approving projects for Miami-Dade County and is comprised of:
-
the thirteen (13) Board of County Commissioners;
-
a Miami-Dade Expressway Authority (MDX) representative;
-
a Miami-Dade County School Board representative;
-
an elected official from each of the six municipalities with a population over 50,000;
-
a representative from a municipality at-large; and
-
a non-elected public official.
The Governing Board excersizes the powers of the MPO, including final decision on all local transportation planning policy matters, adoption or endorsement of plans and programs, approval of pertinent agreements, adoption of rules, and establishing its internal operating structure.
