Commissioner Souto, Mayor Alvarez and Congressman Diaz-Balart participate in the FIRST groundbreaking ceremony of new affordable housing for the elderly since HUD took over its control

(Miami-Dade County, FL) --
During the breezy morning of May 23, Commissioner Javier D. Souto, Mayor Carlos A. Alvarez and Congressman Lincoln Diaz-Balart participated in the groundbreaking ceremony of Postmaster Apartments.  This private/public partnership is the first affordable housing development for the elderly since the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development took over its control. The event took place at the Postmaster Apartments, 8800 SW 8th Street.

“After much work and with immense gratitude to Congressman Diaz-Balart who convinced a reluctant United States Post Master to provide us with the land for this apartment building, I am proud to bring this project to Westchester as the first government subsidized to be built,” said Commissioner Souto.  “This is a prime location with excellent bus routes and within walking distance of shopping centers, restaurants, bakeries, grocery stores, pharmacies, etc.”

Approximately 13 percent of the apartments in the Postmaster community are affordable for residents with incomes at 30 percent of the Miami-Dade County area median income guidelines and the remaining units are for residents with incomes no greater than 60 percent.  Postmaster Apartments will contain 55 units, 48 of which will be one-bedroom / one-bathroom and seven with two-bedrooms / two-bathrooms.  The monthly payments will range from $261 to $716.  Postmaster Apartments is expected to be completed in April, 2009.

“In my many years in public service and in 16 years in the Congress, I can say this is a great accomplishment,” noted Congressman Diaz-Balart.  “Mayor Alvarez, Commissioner Souto and I worked together as a team for the people of our community; it seemed like a dream and now it is a reality.”
