Commissioner Javier D. Souto sponsors a resolution to designate "Senior Zones" in County parks

Due to the large population of elderly residents in Miami-Dade County, District 10 Commissioner Javier D. Souto has sponsored a resolution asking Mayor Carlos Gimenez to report on the possibility of designating areas at County Parks as “Senior Zones” by installing outdoor exercise equipment tailored for the more mature citizens of the county.

The senior residents from the county would benefit from being more active and healthy in an outdoor setting. In order to facilitate outdoor activities within the elderly community, areas in the County parks could be designated as senior zones with exercise equipment that is tailored and geared toward this population.

This concept of Senior Zones are popular in European parks where they are located in an open area with no shelters or structures with covered roofs, and low-cost equipment to have the least economic impact for the County.

The findings from the report are to be returned within sixty days after the resolution passes.
