(Miami-Dade County, FL) -- As Chairman of the Cultural Affairs and Recreation Committee which oversees the libraries, I want to sincerely thank Mayor Carlos Gimenez, our dedicated Management and Budget Department staff and all my colleagues on the Board of County Commissioners for finding a solution that will keep all our precious County libraries open at the same level of operation and staffing over the coming year. I also applaud the many citizens who attended our first budget hearing last night to express their passionate support for our libraries. Their voices were heard.
Over a month ago, I held a press conference urging the administration and my colleagues to find a way to keep all our libraries open. Last night, we went far beyond accomplishing that. I have always said that our libraries are sacred, and I am ecstatic about this result. However, our work is not over, and I am committed to working with my colleagues to identify other resources and innovative ways to keep our library system whole and continue improving it as we go forward.
