(Miami-Dade County, FL) -- Commissioner Joe A. Martinez is inviting all Miami-Dade County residents to attend his 5th Annual Health & Safety Expo on Saturday, June 27, 2009 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Miami-Dade County Fair and Expo Center’s E. Darwin Fuchs Pavilion on Coral Way and 109 Avenue. Families can attend the free fair and undergo free health check-ups for glucose, high blood pressure, HIV, hemoglobin, cholesterol, and much more. Children can also receive free immunizations with a parent or legal guardian’s permission.
Each year, the expo garners approximately 2,000 attendees who receive medical exams and consultations from health care professionals representing the Miami-Dade County Health Department, Jackson Health System, Baptist Health South Florida, Borinquen Health Care Clinic, and Community Health of South Florida. More than 100 exhibitors and service providers will provide services and medical care at the expo.
This year, representatives from Blue Cross Blue Shield of Florida will have information on the new Miami-Dade Blue medical insurance program, which Commissioner Martinez announced last month. The three-year pilot program will offer comprehensive medical insurance at affordable monthly rates to Miami-Dade County residents who are struggling with the high cost of insurance and do not qualify for government health programs.
“Unfortunately, health care practically becomes a luxury for people who simply cannot afford regular doctor’s visits,” said Commissioner Martinez. “The Annual Health & Safety Expo allows residents to seek medical care and advice from professionals in our community and take the initiative in maintaining a healthy lifestyle.”
