Hundreds celebrate International Literacy Day with County Commissioner Joe A. Martinez

(Miami-Dade County, FL) --
Bedtime in District 11 got a twist thanks to the energy of Commissioner Joe A. Martinez who celebrated International Literacy Day reading bedtime stories to a group of 400 people.  The event took place at the new 15,000-square foot Kendale Lakes Library, 15205 SW 88 Street, on Wednesday, October 15, 2008.

Children arrived in their pajamas and brought along their favorite teddy bear.  Free storybooks and backpacks were distributed.  Everyone received a night time snack of milk, juice, and cookies.

“At first the kids were very overactive and after reading the book they calmed down and became more engaged in the story.   The love for reading needs to start at a very early age and making it a fun event is a great encouragement; especially, in a technology driven world where children are so plugged into television and computers,” said Commissioner Martinez.   “Literacy is a fundamental life tool to help these children succeed.
