(Miami-Dade County, FL) -- Commissioner Joe A. Martinez will be sponsoring free swimming lessons for District 11 children at Tamiami Park, 11201 SW 24 Street, in Miami. The lessons will be available for a limited time on a first-come, first-serve basis. Since 2005, the commissioner has supported this swimming program for children to promote water safety. He will allocate the program’s funding from his own discretionary funds at the next County Commission meeting on May 5, 2009.
According to the Miami-Dade County Health Department, drowning is the leading cause of death to all residents ages 1-4, with children most commonly drowning in a residential swimming pool. The Florida Department of Health states that Florida loses more children under age five to drowning than any other state in the country.
“Swimming is a life-saving skill that needs to be offered to as many families with children as possible, especially considering our county’s close proximity to natural bodies of water and abundance of pools,” said Commissioner Martinez. “These swimming lessons at Tamiami Park will teach children how to be safe while having fun in the water.”
The swimming lessons will be offered to District 11 residents only.
