(Miami-Dade County, FL) -- Commissioner Joe A. Martinez joined local organizations in a press conference at the Miami Baptist Church, citing additional support around Miami-Dade for the devastated island of Haiti. Led by Pastor Robert Myers, the Miami Baptist Association has agreed to work with the County Commission with the goal of collecting one million tents and cots for Haitians left homeless by the 7.0-magnitude earthquake that hit last week.
"With so many homes and buildings now destroyed in Haiti, there isn't much in the way of shelter for the people who are now displaced," said Commissioner Martinez. "A strong aftershock felt today on the island shows that it's not safe for any Haitians to seek shelter amid the unstable construction. I'm grateful to Pastor Myers for leading the effort to collect items that can provide a temporary safe haven to Haitians, as well as the other businesses who have lent their support with numerous donations."
"In addition [to tents and cots], we are asking for first aid supplies, non-perishable food and water, and shoes and clothing," stated Pastor Myers.
The Miami Baptist Association is made up of more than 300 local congregations, with about 100 being Haitian churches. The association is collecting donations, including money, at seven of its congregations (listed at end of press release). The U.S. Southern Command is also working with the Miami Baptist Association to locate volunteers to assist with the relief effort.
Other businesses seeking donations include On the Border Restaurant in Kendall, Memorial Plan, Budget Rental Car, West Kendall Business Association, First Bank, MDI Sports, International Event Design, V-Games Party, Dr. Oscar Hernandez at the Weight Loss Center, and Chanjinl Pallets. On the Border is planning a "Haiti Relief Give Back Night" on Monday, January 25, 2010 from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Ten percent of all proceeds made that day will go to the relief effort. Memorial Plan is also collecting donations at its various locations (listed at end of press release).
