Commissioner Juan C. Zapata sponsors resolution prohibiting the use of Electronic Cigarettes in County owned or operated indoor workplaces
MIAMI, FL – Due to the raised concerns about the safety, health and environmental effects of Electronic Cigarettes, also known as E-Cigarettes, Commissioner Juan C. Zapata is sponsoring a resolution prohibiting the use of electronic cigarettes and other nicotine dispensing devices in County owned or operated indoor workplaces. The resolution will be heard at the February 4th Board of County Commission meeting.
The electronic cigarette’s popularity has steadily grown since 2008 with consumers led to believe that E-cigarettes are a safe alternative to traditional cigarettes, despite the fact that most devices contain nicotine and have the potential to be addictive. In addition, there is no regulatory oversight ensuring the safety of the ingredients in electronic cigarettes.
However, the National Association of Attorneys General issued an urging, signed by 42 attorneys general, to the Commissioner of the United States Food & Drug Administration (FDA) to immediately regulate the sale and advertising of electronic cigarettes. Also, concerns have been raised as to the safety, health and environmental effects of the vapor emitted from electronic cigarettes, both to the person using electronic cigarettes and to people in the surrounding area who may have to breathe the vapor emitted from electronic cigarettes secondhand.
With this resolution, Commissioner Zapata hopes to address the multiple complaints received by the County regarding the use of electronic cigarettes within County enclosed indoor workplaces.
