Senior Homestead Exemption
In 2002, I sponsored resolution R-894-02 that was passed at the Board of County Commissioner’s meeting on July 23, 2003. This resolution urges the Florida State Legislature to propose a constitutional amendment freezing the tax assessments on property of qualifying senior citizens receiving homestead exemption. I am committed to this endeavor. As such, I will continue to work closely with the Miami-Dade Legislative Delegation to get this amendment proposed.
Senior Centers
The Millennium Senior Center and Tamiami Senior Center provide lunch and entertainment for seniors citizens. These centers in conjunction with my office host several events each year including field trips to several County sites, such as Parrot Jungle, Vizcaya and MetroZoo. In addition, during the summer we have partnered with Miami-Dade County Parks and Recreation Department Tamiami Park’s Summer Camp in an effort to partner seniors and children so they can work together on different projects.
Millennium Senior Center is located at 14611 SW 42 Street
Tamiami Senior Center is located at 1401 SW 107 Avenue
Since there is a huge need for community centers in District 11, I have partnered with Little Havanas’ Community Centers in order to build a new state of the art community center for our senior citizens. This center is in the planning stages and construction should begin by the end of 2007.
Flu Shots
For the past three years, I have partnered with the Miami-Dade County Health Department in order to provide seniors throughout District 11and Miami-Dade County an opportunity to receive the flu shot at no cost. This year flu shots were provided at the Tamiami Park Recreation Center on November 28, 2006.
