District 12 encompasses an area of western Miami-Dade County between SW 8th Street and NW 202nd Street, west of Hialeah. It includes the City of Doral, Hialeah, Hialeah Gardens, Medley, Sweetwater, and Virginia Gardens, as well as a large part of unincorporated Miami-Dade County. test
Voters in District 12 first elected José "Pepe" Diaz to the Miami-Dade Board of County Commissioners in September 2002. Commissioner Diaz was reelected in August 2014.

Commissioner Diaz advocates for Veterans

The first resolution urges Congress to direct the Secretary of Veterans Affairs to establish Alzheimer’s disease research, education and clinical centers. The second resolution urges Congress to eliminate the so-called “widow’s tax,” which reduces the Survivor Benefit Plan annuities for surviving spouses of military personnel if those surviving spouses are also receiving Dependency and Indemnity Compensation.

Commissioner Diaz helps break ground on new Hialeah Gardens Branch Library

Miami-Dade County Commissioner Jose “Pepe” Díaz, joined by Hialeah Gardens Mayor Yioset De La Cruz and council members, helped break ground on the new Hialeah Gardens Branch Library on Aug. 10. Expected to open in 2020 within Westland Gardens Park, 13501 NW 107th Ave., the 13,500-square-foot library will be the latest addition to the Miami-Dade Public Library System, replacing the existing storefront location on 87th Court.

Commissioner Diaz urges cancer benefits for firefighters

The Miami-Dade County Commission on July 24 approved a resolution sponsored by Commissioners Jose “Pepe” Diaz urging the Florida Legislature to pass pending legislation that would provide state disability and death benefits to firefighters with cancer and require that firefighters be offered cancer insurance coverage on the job.

Dolphin Station Park and Ride Transit Facility

Coming this fall, the Dolphin Station Park and Ride Transit Terminal Facility located at 11897 NW 12th Street, will accommodate a new Bus Rapid Transit along the Dolphin Expressway connecting to Downtown, along with several other local bus routes, and the potential for growth to include rail.

SR 826/Palmetto Expressway will add tolled express lanes

The Palmetto Express project by the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) District Six will add tolled express lanes along the SR 826/Palmetto Expressway from W. Flagler St. to NW 154 St. and along I-75 from the Palmetto Expressway to NW 170 St. in Miami-Dade County. The project will provide continuity to the upcoming I-75 express lanes being developed by FDOT District Four, from NW 170 St. in Miami-Dade County to I-595 in Broward County.
