(Miami-Dade County, FL) -- Two of Miami-Dade's government officials will go head-to-head this weekend at the Countyline Dragway, 19999 Okeechobee Road. Miami-Dade County Commissioner Jose "Pepe" Diaz and Town of Medley Mayor Ramon Rodriguez will race on Sunday, February 8, 2009 during "Miami-Dade Appreciation Day" at the racetrack. The event promises to be a fun-filled day of activities for families, and was organized in honor of Commissioner Diaz and Miami-Dade's Aviation Department, both proving instrumental in the establishment of Countyline Dragway.
"The goal of Countyline Dragway was to provide an outlet for racers and prevent illegal street racing in Miami-Dade," said Commissioner Diaz. "Since the track opened in 2007, it has received a tremendous amount of support and positive feedback, with drivers now racing in a way that won't pose a risk to other drivers on our streets."
Gates open at 11 a.m. to the public and activities start at 12 noon. Spectator admission is $10 for adults, $5 for children ages 6 to 12, and free for children ages 5 and under. Racing costs $25. Miami-Dade County employees receive a special discount for the day - $10 to race and free admission as a spectator with proper ID.
Attendees can drag race and participate in "Beat the Heat", where drivers can go up against police officers. A bounce house and Elvis Wheel Stander will also be at the event. Presentations and recognition will take place at 2 p.m.
