Local officials to make announcement on FEMA ruling regarding Sweetwater flood zone appeal

(Miami-Dade County, FL) --
Miami-Dade County Commissioner Jose “Pepe” Diaz and City of Sweetwater Mayor Manny Maroño will be holding a press conference on Monday, October 3, 2011 to announce the outcome of a long appeals process with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) on flood zone issues. The press conference will take place at Sweetwater City Hall, 500 SW 109 Avenue, at 10:30 a.m. Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen and Congressman Mario Diaz-Balart have also been invited to attend.

Classified as a high-risk flood zone by FEMA in 2009, Sweetwater has been an area racked by increased flood insurance rates for residents, despite the city completing a $20 million project to install pumps that prevent flooding, as well as additional maintenance to improve drainage near sidewalks.
Both Commissioner Diaz and Mayor Maroño had partnered to get this flood classification repealed, filing a Letter of Map Revision (LOMR) with FEMA to take Sweetwater off the high-risk map. FEMA recently responded to the appeal, and some federal officials who were part of the process will also be attending the press conference to announce the agency’s final decision.
