(Miami-Dade County, FL) -- Commissioner Jose “Pepe” Diaz will celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Tribute to the Military 5K Run/Walk on Sunday, February 19, 2012 at Merrick Park in Coral Gables. The commissioner will serve as the Grand Marshal during this event, which supports servicemen and women and their families through programs at facilities like the Fisher House at VA Hospital Miami, Walter Reed Army Hospital, and Bethesda Navy Hospital.
The race starts at 8 a.m. and is open to the public. Runners can compete in several categories and awards will be given to various age groups. In addition, the event will include family fun and entertainment for people of all ages. Participants can test their strength on the U.S. Army Climb Wall, or enjoy an inflatable bounce house and interactive displays.
“Enlisting in the military, while a noble cause, is not an easy choice. Soldiers risk their lives for our country, but their families are also enlisted in a way, doing all they can to support our troops from home,” said Commissioner Diaz, who serves as Miami-Dade County’s military liaison. “It’s an honor to be invited to participate in this event, which allows the community a chance to express their thanks for our men and women in uniform.” Commissioner Diaz has also served in the U.S. Marine Corps.
