Commissioner Diaz supports “Live Like Bella” Bone Marrow Donor Drive through April 10

Miami-Dade County Commissioner Jose “Pepe” Diaz is supporting a life-saving bone marrow donor drive under way at the “Live Like Bella” Child Cancer Foundation’s booth at the Miami Dade County Youth Fair’s main entrance, 10901 Coral Way.

Foundation representatives are performing swabs of the inside of participants’ cheeks through Sunday, April 10 to identify potential donors for 3-year-old Aksel Johnson of Miami, who is in need of a bone marrow transplant to save his life. The drive will run from 3 to 9 p.m. on Friday, and from noon to 9 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. Admission to the fair is not required to participate in the drive.

“I urge residents to participate and find out if they are a match, because they could really save a child’s life,” Commissioner Diaz said.

Live Like Bella was founded in June 2013 in memory of Bella Rodriguez-Torres, who died from an aggressive form of childhood cancer at 10 years old. The foundation funds innovative pediatric cancer research and provides support for families with children currently in treatment and assists families who have lost a child to cancer with funeral or headstone expenses.
