(Miami-Dade County, FL) -- The many people who lined up outside of Vice-Chairman Jose “Pepe” Diaz’s Community Job and Resource Fair are an unfortunate sign of the economic recession that has left them unemployed. However, the fair, held on Wednesday, August 5, 2009, gave more than 1,000 residents the opportunity to meet with potential employers and learn useful skills in acquiring employment, such as resume writing and applying for jobs. With help from the Miami-Dade Community Action Agency, Commissioner Diaz hosted the free job and resource fair at the Firefighters Memorial Building in Doral.
Several agencies attended the event to help job seekers, including the Broward Sheriff’s Office, Terminex, South Florida Workforce, Everest University, Helping Hands of Miami-Dade CAA, Sonesta Bayfront Hotel, U.S. Census, Adrienne Arsht Center, U.S. Department of Commerce, Miami-Dade Consumer Services, Miami-Dade Transit, Miami-Dade Solid Waste, Miami-Dade Housing, Miami-Dade Code Compliance, Miami-Dade Teen Court, Miami-Dade Corrections and Rehabilitation, and Miami-Dade Elections. Attendees completed applications in hopes of acquiring a new job; companies now have the task of reviewing the applications for any position(s) they have available.
“I spoke with many residents who told me their hardships in looking for work,” said Commissioner Diaz. “The fact that we had so many people here is bittersweet because while my goal was to organize a successful event, the tremendous turnout demonstrates that Miami-Dade County officials have their work cut out for them in addressing local unemployment. I will continue to do all I can to provide job assistance to residents in need.”
