Vice-Chairman Jose “Pepe” Diaz wins approval for ordinance giving preference to service-disabled veterans seeking County contracts

(Miami-Dade County, FL) --
On September 1, 2009, the Miami-Dade Board of County Commissioners approved an ordinance authored by Vice-Chairman Jose “Pepe” Diaz that provides preference to service-disabled military veterans who are local vendors when the County awards contracts. The item passed 11 – 1.

The County Code will be amended to specify that a “Local Certified Service-Disabled Veteran Business Enterprise that submits a bid for a contract shall receive a bid preference of five percent of the price bid.” The preference will only be used for evaluating and awarding the bids and will not affect the contract price. In addition, the preference will also be extended to Requests for Proposals (RFP), Requests for Qualifications (RFQ), Requests for Information (RFI), and Notices to Professional Consultants.

“We have disabled veterans across Miami-Dade who have made extraordinary sacrifices for our nation,” said Commissioner Diaz, who served in the U.S. Marines and is the County’s military liaison. “Their dedication to upholding our freedoms should be acknowledged should they wish to procure a contract to work with the County.”

Commissioner Diaz was met with support by several of his colleagues; Commissioners Barbara Jordan, Dorrin Rolle, Audrey Edmonson, Rebeca Sosa, Carlos Gimenez, Katy Sorenson, Dennis Moss, and Javier Souto all co-sponsored the item.
