(Miami-Dade County, FL) -- Vice-Chairman Jose "Pepe" Diaz scored a big "goal" Tuesday, November 17, 2009 as the Miami-Dade Board of County Commissioners passed his resolution confirming their commitment for the county to be the host site for either the 2018 or 2022 FIFA World Cup. The resolution urges the USA Bid Committee to select Miami-Dade County as the host for one of the most-anticipated sporting events in the world.
"I still remember the last World Cup and how many Miami-Dade County residents watched each and every game, cheering for their favorite team," said Vice-Chairman Diaz. "That's the excitement we want to bring - live - to South Florida. The World Cup would provide a tremendous boost to our local businesses and tourism, and put Miami in the spotlight to the millions watching the games worldwide."
The Commissioner, who serves as the Chairman of the Miami-Dade Sports Commission and is also the Chairman of the MIAMI/Host Bid Committee, traveled to New York last week with Miami-Dade Sports Commission Executive Director Mike Sophia, Greater Miami Convention and Visitors Bureau's Bill Talbert, and Bruce Schulze and Todd Boyan with Landshark Stadium to participate in a workshop by the USA Bid Committee. The workshop focused on stadium details, transportation, hotel requirements and the bid process.
Twenty-seven U.S. cities are vying to be the host site, including Miami. To help bring the games back to the United States, 50,000 signatures are needed by November 30, 2009. Sign the petition online by visiting www.gousabid.com and support Miami.
