(Miami-Dade County, FL) -- Commissioner Jose "Pepe" Diaz honored our troops at the 9th Annual Tribute to the Military 5K Run/Walk on Sunday, February 6, 2011. Almost 1,000 participants lined up at Coral Gables City Hall for the start of the event, with proceeds supporting numerous military organizations throughout Miami. Groups that will be receiving funding include the Fisher House at the VA Medical Center, Armed Forces Service Center at Miami International Airport, Operation Brave Kids, Wounded Warriors, Fort Hood Disaster Relief Fund, and others.
"The number of people who attend this annual event has grown every year since the run's inception, which has made a tremendous impact on our military personnel and veterans here in Miami," said Commissioner Diaz, who also serves as the County's military liaison. "It is heartwarming to see the community give back to our soldiers who sacrifice so much to protect us."
In total, about 2,000 runners and spectators enjoyed an "after run" party, with free refreshments, giveaways, kids' bounce house, and entertainment. For more information on the Tribute to the Military Run/Walk, please visit www.tributetothemilitary.org online.
