(Miami-Dade County, FL) -- Commissioner Jose "Pepe" Diaz celebrated the grand opening of the NW 137 Avenue Extension - Beacon Lakes Boulevard - in West Miami-Dade on Tuesday, April 5, 2011. The commissioner joined Flagler's Executive Vice President and South Florida Market Officer Eric D. Swanson for a special ribbon-cutting ceremony and welcomed the first car to drive over the long-anticipated roadway.
The opening the NW 137 Avenue Extension now connects the Dolphin Expressway/836 Extension to the Beacon Lakes Business Park West Miami-Dade. Flagler, AMB Property Corporation, and Miami-Dade County partnered with the Beacon Lakes Community Development District and CEMEX on the project to drive commerce and economic development to the burgeoning area. The extended roadway facilitates access to the Beacon Lakes Business Park, which is poised to become West Miami-Dade's industrial and retail epicenter.
The thoroughfare provides a much-needed North-South artery to alleviate traffic congestion from northwestern parts of the county, and shortens commutes for residents working in Doral's business district. The construction project also included other improvements such as enhancements of the signalization of adjacent streets, upgraded rail crossing at 137th Avenue and NW 12th Street, improvements to FPL's power grid, and a beautified mitigation area to the east of the road.
"Businesses have been growing throughout West Miami-Dade, which lead to serious gridlock on the roads," said Commissioner Diaz. "With this new roadway, motorists will have a much easier time commuting to and from the Doral area and spend less frustrated behind the wheel."
