Commissioner Jose “Pepe” Diaz establishes taxicab medallion lottery for veterans

(Miami-Dade County, FL) --
An ordinance establishing taxicab medallions directed to veterans of the United States Armed forces who have been honorably discharged passed second hearing at today's Board of County Commission meeting. It was originally heard at the Regional Transportation Committee on July 11, 2011.

Pursuant to a lottery advertised and supervised by the Consumer Services Department, six for-hire taxicab licenses will be issued to chauffeurs who are veterans of the United States Armed forces who have been honorably discharged.

"As the County's military liaison, I understand the difficulties many of our veterans have in finding stable work," said Commissioner Diaz, who also served in the U.S. Marines. "This lottery will give veterans the chance to potentially become a licensed cab driver and work steadily in Miami-Dade County."

The item will be heard for final action by the Board of County Commissioners at a future date to be determined.
