(Miami-Dade County, FL) -- Commissioner Jose "Pepe" Diaz helped students in his district start off the school year right. About 230 children were invited to the Commissioner's district office on Tuesday, August 16, 2011 to receive a free book bag and school supplies.
The lucky children receiving the book bags were all pre-selected from District 12 schools. The backpacks were filled with spiral and composition notebooks, paper, folders, binders, erasers, sharpeners, glue sticks, rulers, pens, pencils and other essential school supplies. The children also had a surprise visit from Florida Marlins' staff, which gave out prizes throughout the event, and Billy the Marlin, who took photos with everyone.
This event was sponsored by Commissioner Diaz, the Miami Dolphins, the Florida Marlins, Walmart and Philly Steak Sub Shop, Wholesome Foods, and Panera Bread.
"The kids were so excited to see Billy the Marlin and get their new book bags. They're definitely ready for the school year to start and meet their teachers and friends," said Commissioner Diaz.
