Commissioner Jose “Pepe” Diaz serves pizza to students at Youth Co-Op Charter School in Hialeah Gardens as part of his “14 Days of Neighborly Love” initiative

Eighth graders from the Youth Co-Op Charter School in Hialeah Gardens were treated to a pizza party hosted by Commissioner Jose “Pepe” on Thursday, February 16, 2012 as part of his special initiative to bring goodwill to Miami-Dade residents. The students learned about “14 Days of Neighborly Love – Inspiring Random Acts of Kindness,” a program the commissioner created to show respect and consideration to others in the spirit on Valentine’s Day. Students receiving a grade point average of 3.5 or higher this quarter had a special lunch of pizza and juice thanks to Commissioner Diaz, who personally served each of the children.

The “14 Days of Neighborly Love” initiative, inspired in part by Valentine’s Day, involves businesses and organizations donating their time and services from February 14 to February 27 to residents as a way of showing love for their neighbors and community. Until February 27, residents can take advantage of several services and goods offered at a discount or for free, such as tax preparation, marriage counseling, car washes, and more.

At the school, Commissioner Diaz told the students that his act of kindness for the day was thanking them for being such excellent students. He also asked them to think about what they can do to be kind to others. Some students already have plans in the works, telling the commissioner they were going to help their parents cook, wash dishes and do laundry.

“You certainly learn compassion early in life from your parents, teachers, and other adults. I hope these students have learned the importance of giving to others,” said Commissioner Diaz.
