Commissioner Jose “Pepe” Diaz’s initiative “14 Days of Neighborly Love” caught on with one local resident who wanted to pay it forward when it came to kindness. On Thursday, February 23, 2012, Keith Withbeck, who manages the Military Hospitality Lounge at Miami International Airport, donated a barbecue grill and three gas tanks to the Miami VA Healthcare System so patients can enjoy picnics during their stay. Commissioner Diaz, who is Miami-Dade’s military liaison and also served in the U.S. Marines, was on hand for the presentation and promised the hospital that he would personally grill some burgers and hotdogs for the patients next month to break in the new grill.
The “14 Days of Neighborly Love – Inspiring Random Acts of Kindness” initiative, motivated in part by Valentine’s Day, involves businesses and organizations donating their time and services from February 14 to February 27 to residents as a way of showing love for their neighbors and community. Until February 27, residents can take advantage of several services and goods offered at a discount or for free, such as tax preparation, marriage counseling, car washes, and more.
“It’s great to see that these acts of kindness are catching on and residents are doing what they can to show their neighbors that they care,” said Commissioner Diaz. “Thank you to Mr. Withbeck for giving these brave veterans something they can look forward to while they are being treated.”
