Billy the Marlin and Commissioner Jose "Pepe" Diaz help 8-year-old Julian Polo from Doral Academy Charter Elementary School try on his new backpack at the commissioner's annual back-to-school book bag giveaway.
Students filled Commissioner Jose "Pepe" Diaz's district office in Doral to take part in the commissioner's annual book bag giveaway. The commissioner distributed 230 backpacks filled with schools supplies to kids most in need his district on Wednesday, August 8. Teachers from the 20 schools located in District 12 selected students who would benefit the most from the giveaway.
School supplies were donated by Wal-Mart and Flagler Development. The Miami Marlins and Miami Dolphins also participated, passing out tickets to youngsters who won a special raffle. Billy the Marlin made a special appearance to greet the students and take pictures with them.
"Thanks to the generosity of some sponsors and local organizations, these kids will be all set for the new school year," said Commissioner Diaz.

Commissioner Jose "Pepe" Diaz and Billy the Marlin with 13-year-old Rosa Ribera and her brother, 12-year-old Jesus Ribera. Both attend Dr. Rolando Espinosa K-8 Center and won Miami Dolphins tickets.
