Commissioner Diaz wants entrance safety signs at Rickenbacker Causeway
(MIAMI-DADE COUNTY) – Signs reminding motorists to share the road with bicyclists and pedestrians could soon be going up at the entrance to Rickenbacker Causeway, which has been the site of a number of accidents involving cyclists in recent years.
Miami-Dade County Commissioner Jose “Pepe” Diaz is sponsoring a resolution that calls for installing the safety signs when funding becomes available, from either the County or outside sponsors. The resolution is scheduled for a vote at the Tuesday, June 3 Board of County Commission meeting. The meeting begins at 9:30 a.m. at the Stephen P. Clark Center, 111 NW 1st Street.
“Recent construction on the causeway, which reduces the distance between cars and bicyclists, has increased the urgency of safety measures,” Commissioner Diaz said. “And as a cyclist, I’m committed to doing what I can to help make the Rickenbacker Causeway safe for bicyclists and pedestrians.”
Commissioner Diaz has been a strong advocate for improving safety on the Rickenbacker Causeway and surrounding roadways. Earlier this year, he sponsored a resolution calling for a feasibility study on several proposed measures to make the Rickenbacker safer, including closing the causeway’s right lane in both directions on weekend mornings and reducing speed limits.
