(MIAMI-DADE COUNTY) – Mater Academy’s football team defeated Westland Hialeah High on Oct. 9 to win the first-ever “Commissioners Cup.”

The 43-0 victory earned the Mater Academy Lions a trophy presented by Commissioner Jose “Pepe” Diaz, who represents District 12 where Mater Academy is located. Commissioner Diaz sponsored the game along with Commissioner Esteban Bovo Jr. of District 13, which includes Westland Hialeah High. Each commissioner also presented a $1,000 check to his respective school’s athletic department.

“I’m thrilled my team captured the Commissioners Cup, but I also want to congratulate Westland Hialeah’s Wildcats and Commissioner Bovo for their excellent sportsmanship,” Commissioner Diaz said. “We all had a great time, and this friendly competition gave both schools a big boost. In my book, everybody is a winner!”
