Commissioner Diaz urges Legislature to require sexual predators and offenders to wear electronic monitoring devices

(MIAMI-DADE COUNTY) – Miami-Dade County Commissioner Jose “Pepe” Diaz is sponsoring a resolution urging the Florida Legislature to require sexual predators and offenders to wear electronic monitoring devices for the rest of their lives.

The resolution will be taken up at the Board of County Commissioners meeting on Wednesday, Nov. 5. The meeting begins at 9:30 a.m. in the Commission Chambers on the second floor of the Stephen P. Clark Center, 111 N.W. 1st Street.

“We need to do everything we can to keep our children safe by keeping better tabs on these predators,” Commissioner Diaz said. “Requiring sexual offenders to wear electronic monitoring devices would allow law enforcement to determine their location at all times and to be immediately alerted if they go somewhere they shouldn’t be.”

Commissioner Diaz has been a strong crusader against sexual predators. He was the sponsor of the County’s 2010 residency restriction ordinance, which prohibits sexual offenders from living within 2,500 feet of schools, parks, bus stops, or any other place children might congregate. He also sponsored the resolution that urged passage of a new state law that closed a loophole which had allowed some offenders and predators to avoid providing a home address by claiming “transient” status.
