Commissioner Diaz sponsors legislation to encourage energy efficient homes

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY – Miami-Dade County is looking to offer residents an alternative to make it easier for them to make their homes more energy-efficient.

Miami-Dade County Commissioner Jose “Pepe” Diaz is sponsoring legislation to make the Property Assessed Clean Energy (PACE) program available to property owners in unincorporated Miami-Dade County. The ordinance is scheduled for final approval at the Board of County Commission meeting on Tuesday, March 8.

PACE is a voluntary program available in many cities across the nation that provides municipal government financing to participating homeowners for energy efficiency upgrades or renewable energy installations such as solar panels and improved insulation. Homeowners are then assessed annually through their property tax bills for the improvements.

“Encouraging homeowners to make their homes more energy-efficient is a win-win for the environment and the economy,” Commissioner Diaz said.

Incorporated areas also could take advantage of the PACE program through interlocal agreements with the County, Commissioner Diaz said.
