Commissioner Diaz champions paid leave for disabled veterans

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY – The Miami-Dade County Commission on Oct. 3 approved two pro-veteran pieces of legislation sponsored by Commissioner Jose “Pepe” Diaz.

The first, an ordinance co-prime sponsored by both Commissioners Diaz and Rebeca Sosa, provides paid leave to County and Public Health Trust employees who are disabled veterans.

The second, a resolution, urges Congress to eliminate the so-called “widow’s tax,” which reduces the Survivor Benefit Plan annuities for surviving spouses of military personnel if those surviving spouses are also receiving Dependency and Indemnity Compensation from the federal government.

“I’m very grateful to my colleagues on the Commission for once again joining me in showing this County’s support for our veterans and their families, who have sacrificed so much for this country,” said Commissioner Diaz, who chairs the County’s Military Affairs Board.
