MIAMI-DADE COUNTY – Miami-Dade County Commissioner Jose “Pepe” Diaz on Oct. 6 joined Doral city officials and family members and colleagues of late Univision Channel 23 anchor Guillermo Benites at a street renaming ceremony. Northwest 41st Street between 93rd Court and 97th Avenue is now designated “Guillermo Benites Way” after the Emmy award-winning news anchor, who died last year at the age of 75 following a long career as a Spanish-language news anchor. “Guillermo Benites was a true pioneer of Spanish-language television in the United States and genuinely connected with his audience with his engaging style as he passionately reported on the life of Miami,” said Commissioner Diaz, who sponsored the resolution approving the street name change.

Benites, an Argentine native, moved to Miami in 1968, where he worked as a radio announcer before joining Univision as a weatherman and soon becoming its primary news anchor.
