Commissioner Diaz sponsors resolution condemning Nicaragua’s Ortega regime

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY – Miami-Dade County Commissioner Jose "Pepe" Diaz is sponsoring a resolution condemning the Nicaraguan government for using violence and intimidation to suppress political opposition. The resolution will be voted on at the Tuesday, June 5th Board of County Commission meeting, starting at 9:30 a.m.

Dozens of demonstrators protesting the government of Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega have been killed and hundreds wounded in street protests in Managua since the middle of April.

“Violence should never be used to silence political opposition, especially in a country where Ortega is often reelected with a mere plurality of the popular vote,” said Commissioner Diaz, whose district includes Sweetwater, which is home to the largest concentration of Nicaraguans and Nicaraguan Americans in the United States and is known as “Little Managua.”

Commissioner Diaz’s resolution also calls on the Organization of American States to take action and urges Congress to pass legislation promoting democracy and the rule of law in Nicaragua.
