Commissioner Diaz sponsors legislation to encourage County employees to assist Dorian victims

MIAMI – Miami-Dade County Commissioner Jose “Pepe” Diaz is sponsoring legislation to allow County employees to contribute the monetary value of their accrued holiday and annual leave time to the County’s Emergency Disaster Relief Fund for the purpose of donating to Hurricane Dorian relief efforts in the Bahamas and other affected areas.

The resolution is scheduled for consideration at today’s County Commission meeting (Sept. 4) in the County Commission Chamber at the Stephen P. Clark Center, 111 NW 1st Street.

Hurricane Dorian struck the northwestern Bahamas as a Category 5 hurricane on Sept. 1, causing widespread devastation as it hovered over Grand Bahama and Abaco islands for 36 hours.

“While we are grateful that South Florida avoided another major hurricane that appeared to be heading our way, our hearts go out to our friends in the Bahamas as they look to recover from this devastating hurricane, and I know we can count on the generosity of our employees once again, as we have many times in the past, to help our neighbors get back on their feet,” Commissioner Diaz said.
