Commission protects public housing residents from evictions during natural disasters

MIAMI – The Miami-Dade County Commission on Nov. 19 approved legislation sponsored by Miami-Dade County Commissioner Jose “Pepe” Diaz to protect residents of County-owned housing from evictions during natural disasters.

The resolution directs the Miami-Dade Police and Public Housing departments to take no action to facilitate the eviction of residents of public housing or other County-owned affordable housing during a declared state of emergency.

“We shouldn’t be evicting people from their homes during a hurricane or other natural disaster. It’s inhumane and diverts valuable law enforcement resources away from dealing with the emergency at hand,” Commissioner Diaz said.

In October, the Commission approved two other resolutions sponsored by Commissioner Diaz urging the state to halt any pending evictions during a state of emergency.
