Commissioner Diaz sponsors COVID-19 legislation

MIAMI – The Miami-Dade County Commission, at its first-ever virtual meeting on April 7, approved several pieces of legislation sponsored by Commissioner Jose “Pepe” Diaz that relate to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The resolutions call for the County to place hand sanitation stations in all County buildings, transit stations, and transit vehicles and urge local businesses to do the same for their customers and employees, and to make emergency purchases from local businesses and local small businesses whenever practicable during the COVID-19 pandemic. Two additional resolutions urge Congress to pass legislation to add coronavirus testing to the list of services that health insurers are required to cover at no cost to patients and to enact a temporary payroll tax cut as part of an economic stimulus plan to help counteract the impact from the pandemic, as proposed by President Donald Trump.

“In these unprecedented times, the health and economic wellbeing of our citizens require the full attention of all levels of government to ensure that we not only contain and defeat this virus but also assist our residents and businesses in recovering from the impacts of this extended state of emergency once it’s over,” Commissioner Diaz said.

The Commission meeting was held entirely virtually to comply with the Governor Ron DeSantis’ April 1 Executive Order to maintain social distancing.
