(Miami-Dade County, FL) -- “Green” legislation that Commissioner Natacha Seijas sponsored almost two years ago has recently paved the way for Miami-Dade’s receipt of $12,523,700 in an Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) from the federal government. On Friday, March 27, Congress approved the allocation, which can be used to fund energy-efficient and environmentally-sustainable projects.
The EECBG program is currently providing more than $2.6 billion in grants to U.S. local governments, states, territories, and Indian tribes to fund projects that reduce energy use and fossil fuel emissions, and that improve in energy efficiency. In June 2007, Commissioner Seijas was the prime sponsor of a resolution urging Congress to adopt the Energy and Environment Block Grant Act. The grants, she stated, would be a boon for helping the County develop more energy efficient policies.
“With this funding, the County can focus on encouraging more green initiatives, like energy efficiency in construction, using alternative fuels for County vehicles, developing land use plans for pedestrian-friendly communities, and much more,” said Commissioner Seijas. “I am extremely grateful to our Congressional representatives who pushed for Miami-Dade to receive this grant, including Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, Kendrick Meek, Lincoln and Mario Diaz-Balart, and Debbie Wasserman Schultz.”
Commissioner Seijas has advocated for several policies and partnerships that would promote green initiatives in Miami-Dade County. Under her leadership, the County established the Climate Change Advisory Task Force and joined the Chicago Climate Exchange (CCX), both of which take steps to protect the environment. She also supported the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s WaterSense Program to conserve water and sits on the National Association of Counties’ Environment, Energy and Land Use Steering Committee.
