Commissioner Bovo visits students at Spanish Lake Elementary School

Commissioner Bovo paid a friendly visit to the first grade students of Spanish Lake Elementary to promote the importance of literacy as he read and challenged the class to read 3 books by the Thanksgiving holiday.

According to international non-profit ProLiteracy, 30 million Americans over age 16 do not read well enough to understand a newspaper story written at the eighth grade level or fill out a job application.  Illiteracy has also been linked to various socio-economic issues, leading to a greater likelihood of committing a crime, being incarcerated, non-productivity in the workforce, loss of tax revenue due to unemployment, and more health risks due to not being able to understand medical information.
