(Miami-Dade County, FL) -- On Sunday, November 18, 2012, Commissioner Esteban Bovo, Jr. distributed over 200 turkeys and canned foods to underprivileged families throughout his District during a Thanksgiving event hosted at Amelia Earhart Park. In addition to the various residents in District 13, the following organizations received tickets to redeem a turkey along with canned goods: Amelia Earhart Elementary School, Christ the Savior Orthodox Cathedral, Community Action & Human Services of Miami-Dade County, Hialeah Housing Authority, Mae Walters Elementary School, Miami Lakes K-8 Center, Northwest Police District Station, North Hialeah Elementary, St. Benedict Catholic Church, and YMCA South Park.
Those in attendance were provided with lunch by Commissioner Bovo and free giveaways sponsored by Miami-Dade Water & Sewer and Miami-Dade Public Works & Waste Management. There were activities for children that included a bounce house, pony rides, and face painting by volunteers at Beauty School of America. Additionally, the Miami-Dade Public Library System provided kids with story time and arts and crafts.
The Miami-Dade Police Department participated by exhibiting a police unit and helicopter while the U.S. Army made its presence known by displaying a Hummer during the event. This Thanksgiving Giveaway event was made possible by generous donations from several sponsors including Sedano’s Supermarket.
“The families that attended this event had the opportunity to participate in many activities bringing spirit to their upcoming holiday season” Said Commissioner Bovo. “It brings me joy to know that I was able to provide a Thanksgiving meal to my constituency.”
