(Miami-Dade County, FL) -- Miami-Dade County Commissioner Natacha Seijas is inviting the public to an event commemorating the anniversary of Cuban Independence Day. The program will take place on Monday, May 19, 2008 at 10:00 a.m., in the lobby of the Stephen P. Clark Center, 111 NW First Street.
As a part of the activities, Cuban dances will be performed by Las Maraqueras and students from Lincoln-Marti School Dance Troupe. Also, Pily de la Rosa, accomplished artist and founder of Grateli, will be honored for her contributions to the cultural arts. Numerous exhibitors will be on hand showcasing Cuban culture including cigar rolling, and arts and crafts. In addition, Dr. Jaime Suchlicki, author of a dozen books on Cuba and Latin America, will be hosting a book signing for his new book “Breve Historia de Cuba.”
Participants will also have the opportunity to enjoy exhibits that showcase the different exodus of the Cuban people in search for freedom. The exhibition is being presented by the University of Miami’s Institute for Cuban and Cuban-American Studies and will also showcase political prisoners who have sacrificed their lives for the freedom of the island. The exhibition will be on display throughout the month of May.
“Cuban Independence Day is commemorated by Cubans all over the world in remembrance of our long struggle for freedom, a struggle which continues to this day,” said Commissioner Seijas.
