Miami-Dade County to sign Sister City Agreement with Aix-Marseille-Provence Metropolis, France on Nov. 6

Delegation of 117 participants visiting the County to strengthen business and cultural relationship


MIAMI – Miami-Dade County Commission Chairman Esteban L. Bovo, Jr. and Commissioner Jose “Pepe” Diaz, who serves as Chair of the International Trade Consortium, and the Board of County Commissioners, will officially welcome a delegation from Marseille, France in a Sister City Agreement signing ceremony and press conference on Monday, Nov. 6 at 10:30 a.m., at the Commission Chambers in the Stephen P. Clark Center, 111 NW 1st St. The Miami-Dade County Department of Regulatory and Economic Resources’ Office of Economic Development and International Trade, along with the County Commission, will host the delegation from November 4 to 10.

This official visit is a direct result of a Miami-Dade County Business Development Mission to Marseille, France in 2015. The delegation is led by the Honorable Jean-Claude Gaudin, President of Aix-Marseille-Provence Metropolis, Mayor of Marseille, Former Minister, Honorary Vice-President of the French Senate, and Ms. Martine Vassal, 1st Vice-President of Aix-Marseille-Provence Metropolis, President of the Bouches du Rhone Area’s Council.

The delegation of approximately 117 participants includes top government officials from the Aix-Marseille-Provence Metropolis, City of Marseille, Aix-en-Provence and the Bouches-du-Rhone area, as well as representatives of economic development agencies, French businesses and the French media. It is the largest delegation Miami-Dade County has ever hosted.

Delegates will meet with County officials and local business and industry experts, as well as participate in business-to-business meetings.

“Our communities have a long history. It is a pleasure to strengthen the relationship with a Sister City Agreement with Aix-Marseille-Provence Metropolis,” Chairman Bovo said.

“When I led the mission in 2015, it was not a beginning, but a continuation,” added Commissioner Diaz. . “A continuation to not only strengthen our relationship but also an economic benefit for both of us”.

• Largest French metropolitan area, with 92 municipalities and 1.8 million inhabitants
• No. 1 port in France, No. 2 port in the Mediterranean
• No. 1 low-cost airport in Europe, No. 1 cruise port with 1.6 million passengers (same as Venice, Italy)
• 17.5 million high-speed rail passengers (Aix-en-Provence and Marseille)
• Largest French-speaking university in the world (95,000 students)
