Tossing litter (drink cups, food containers and paper products) out of the window of the car is bad for our neighborhoods in many ways. Litter is a magnet for more litter and the illegal dumping of larger debris. It is bad for the environment, bad for property values and costs a lot to clean up.
The Department of Solid Waste Management is working to combat litter and illegal dumping throughout the unincorporated Miami-Dade community.
Toss it in.
Department litter crews are picking up litter everyday and tackling hundreds of miles of roadways each year. But as fast as we pick it up, more litter is tossed along our roadways! To really make a positive difference, we all need to get involved and take pride in our community.

How can you help?

- Cover and secure any vehicle, truck or trailer carrying a load.
- Securely cover trash and garbage containers to prevent wind or animals from spreading litter.
- Carry a litterbag in your vehicle.
- When visiting parks and recreation areas, make sure to leave the area clean for the next person to enjoy.
- Keep your yard clean and free of debris that can blow into the street and become litter.
- Make sure garbage bags are tied securely so that loose papers and other items don’t fall out and become litter.
- Do not overfill waste containers, as it will result in litter on the streets.
- Remove flyers or take-out menus from your car or front door before they are blown into the neighborhood as litter.
- Set an example by not littering.
- Remind others not to litter.

Just for Kids!
Here’s how you can help.
 Be sure your trash goes in the trash can, not just near it.- Pick up after yourself at a picnic or a fast-food restaurant.
- Do your part to help pick up trash around your home and school.
- Never throw anything from a car or truck.
- Always set an example by not littering, no matter where you are.
- Encourage your schools to conduct on-going litter and recycling programs.
