    Hybrid Vehicle Pilot Program

The hybrid vehicle's unique energy recovery system uses stored hydraulic energy rather than diesel fuel to power the truck as it makes house-to-house stops for waste collection. The Miami-Dade Department of Solid Waste Management, in partnership with the Fleet Management Division of the General Services Administration Department, conducted a four-week pilot program using a hybrid waste collection vehicle.

    • Solid Waste Management was the first municipal solid waste agency in the United States to be given the opportunity to test this hybrid vehicle in its waste collection operation.

    • The vehicle was driven by Waste Truck Driver John Lewis, a 19-year employee with the Department of Solid Waste Management.
