    Commercial Modified Programs

While businesses are encouraged to implement a standard recycling program whenever possible, we recognize that not all businesses are alike. Therefore, we will consider requests for "modified" recycling programs. In fact, there are four modified program options available to commercial establishments:

    1. Self Hauling materials. Your establishment will collect its own recyclables and take them directly to a recycler for sale and processing. You agree to maintain receipts provided by the recycler at the time of drop-off to substantiate recycling activity.
    2. Substituting material recycled. Your company can substitute recyclable materials not included in our list, as long as they comprise a greater portion of your waste than any of the materials listed. (Examples of substitute materials are motor oil and filters.)
    3. Recycling less than three materials. Your establishment can recycle less than the three materials required, as long as the materials you don't recycle comprise less than 5% of your waste.
    4. Contracting for post-collection separation of recyclable material.  Your establishment can contract with a permitted private hauler for post-collection separation of recyclable materials if you:
    • Generate recyclable materials which comply, in kind and quantity, with the recycling requirements.
    • Utilize a materials separation facility which is permitted in accordance with all applicable federal, state and local laws.

Your company can be a good candidate for a modified program:

    • If over 95% of the waste stream is non-recyclable material
    • If it is a small operation producing minimal amount of recyclable material
    • Currently recycling a material not on the standard list

    Applying is Easy!

To be considered for a Modified Recycling Program, simply call 305-514-6610 and request an application or download the application in PDF format.  Before completing and submitting the application, contact the Department for assistance.  Keep in mind, if your business qualifies, you must keep records of your recycling efforts and be responsible for all program reporting requirements.
