Miami-Dade County broke a new record in June 2009, reaching the largest monthly total tonnage for recycling since the County started curbside recycling 19 years ago!
"We looked back all the way to May 1990 and found that this past June our curbside recycling program collected more recyclable materials than any other month before," said Solid Waste Director Kathleen Woods-Richardson. "We recovered 5,556 tons of recyclables in June 2009, a new record for Miami-Dade County."
The record comes as Miami-Dade County completes the first full year of its new single-stream curbside recycling program, where residents place all recyclable items into one container. In fact, recycling totals surpassed 5,000 tons two other times since Miami-Dade's single stream recycling program began in June of 2008.
"We collected more than 5,000 tons each in December of 2008 and January of 2009," said Mrs. Woods-Richardson. "Our single-stream curbside recycling program is already a great success, due to its convenience and the enthusiastic participation of our citizens who clearly care about protecting and preserving our environment."
Curbside recycling service is provided to more than 340,000 households in the Department of Solid Waste Management's service area, as well as 11 participating municipalities. Residents place recyclable materials-glass, aluminum, steel, plastic and all types of paper-into a single wheeled recycling cart.
