Miami-Dade Economic Advocacy Trust’s Housing Advocacy Committee presented Homeownership Assistance Program Breakfast Series

(MIAMI, July 31, 2013) – The Miami-Dade Economic Advocacy Trust's Housing Advocacy Committee hosted the first Homeownership Assistance Program (HAP) Breakfast Discussion on Friday, June 28th at Jackson Soul Food Restaurant located in historical Overtown.

The event kicks off a series of housing-related discussions that will take place in various Target Urban Areas (TUAs) in Miami-Dade County.  This HAP Breakfast highlighted issues involving homebuyer education, housing counseling, and client referrals with special guest speaker, Judy Ayers-Britton, Miami Field Office, HUD Housing Program Specialist.  “If I conveyed anything at that meeting, I hope it was the importance of housing counseling and the benefit the counselors provide to the client,” said Ayers-Britton.  “The more knowledgeable the client, the easier it will be for the lender, realtor and title company.”

The purpose of MDEAT’s Housing Advocacy Committee (HAC) is to discuss issues that impact affordable housing in the Miami-Dade County market, and to determine feasible solutions that can be acted upon.  Individuals representing mortgage lenders, real estate professionals and housings providers engage in problem solving sessions to identify strategies that address barriers affecting the supply of affordable housing and financial needs of low to moderate income families.

"The HAP Breakfast Series is designed to bring our HAP participants together with the goal of expanding opportunities for affordable and safe housing among Low to Moderate Income County residents,” said Stephanye Johnson, HAC Chair and Miami-Dade Economic Advocacy Trust Board Member. “The breakfast held at Jackson’s provided valuable insight into HUD counseling requirements and was an overdue networking affair for the overburdened professionals in this market to exchange ideas and expand their outreach."
